Our eyes are our vision portals to the world. Everyday they work for us, so we can drive, enjoy movies, view lovely sceneries, watch your children grow and much more. Imagine life without vision, sadly most of us don't because our eyes are taken for granted.
Today close to 30 million Americans over age 40 have eye ailments that put them at risk for vision loss and blindness, researchers say, warning that the numbers will surge as the baby boomer population ages.
The leading cause of blindness worldwide are Cataracts and are also the top cause of poor vision in the United States, affecting an estimated 20.5 million American adults. Within 20 years cataracts are predicted to affect 30.1 million people.
Macular degeneration involves damage to the macula, the center of the retina at the back of the eye. About 1.8 million adults are affected, the researchers said. In some cases, light-sensitive cells in the macula break down, gradually impairing vision. In others, leaky new blood vessels form behind the retina and cause vision loss.
More than 10 million adults in the United States suffer from Age-related macula degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness amongst people over 55. AMD is a progressive eye disease that affects the central macula of the eye leaving sufferers with only peripheral vision.
Lutein and zeaxanthin, another dietary carotenoid, are found in the macula and studies have indicated that dietary intake of 6mg of these can help protect against the onset of AMD.
A trial was conducted in April 2001 with Subjects divided into categories depending on the state of their vision when recruited. One group of patients already had AMD at the beginning of the study, while another patient group showed only borderline AMD characteristics. Subjects in allgroups were randomly assigned one of the following four regimens:
Daily Supplements for the subjects
Daily Supplements:
Antioxidants (500 mg vitamin C, 400 IUs of vitamin E, 15 mg beta carotene)
Zinc (80 mg of zinc oxide and 2 mg of cupric oxide)
Combination of both antioxidants and zinc
Placebo
After compiling the completed data in April 2001, researchers found that when compared to the placebo group, subjects in the antioxidant group had a 17 percent lower rate of AMD, and subjects in the zinc group had an impressive 21 percent lower incidence of AMD. But those in the group that combined antioxidants and zinc cut their risk of AMD by a full 25 percent.
If all 8 million at risk began to take supplements comparable to those in the AREDS study, more than 300,000 of them would prevent the onset of AMD and the vision loss associated with AMD. The authors of the study state that the intake of these vitamins and nutrients by people at risk of AMD should have "a major impact on them, as well as on the public health."
