Parasites are organisms that live off of nourishment and protection from other living organisms , the host (you, me and anyone else). They may be transmitted from animals to humans, from humans to humans, or from humans to animals. Several parasites have emerged as significant causes of foodborne and waterborne disease. These organisms live and reproduce within the tissues and organs of infected human and animal hosts, and are often excreted in feces. A recent medical study shown an estimated 85% of the North American adult population has at least one form of parasite living in their bodies, but other authorities feel that this figure may be 95%! The stats could be as high as it is because these parasites are SMART! When we say smart, we of course don't mean like humans or apes, but rather smart in their ability to survive and reproduce and often live without being detected because if it is detected.
Parasites are commonly transmitted to humans in different ways, such as insect bites, walking barefoot, human and animal contact, , drinking infected water, eating under-cooked meats and fish, fruits and vegetables among many other ways. Government inspectors do not inspect most of the animals that go through the slaughterhouse. The Center of Disease Control (CDC) put out a report about illnesses linked with fruits and vegetables are on the rise. One reason could be the increased demand for fresh produce. Currently, we import 30 billion tons of food a year. Some of the produce comes from developing nations where sanitation facilities are not concerned about our health or they commonly employee the use of human feces as fertilizer which is called night soil. The further products travel, the more likely they will pick up illness causing microbes and be contaminated by infected food handlers.
Our intestines provide the perfect breeding ground for parasites, because they like their environment to be nestled within impacted waste as well as in the linings of colon walls. Once they make the inside our intestines their home, these microorganisms get the advantage based on numbers, meaning types of parasites and in population.
The three major groups of parasites include protozoans (single-celled organisms), nematodes (roundworms), and cestodes (tapeworms). There are numerous parasites common to North America ranging from microscopic protozoans and Cyclospora cayetanensis often called the yuppie disease because of U.S. outbreaks resulting from fecally-contaminated imported raspberries – to macroscopic multi-cellular worms and nematodes such as hookworm, pinworm, and whipworm.
How do you know if you are infected. Please know sometimes there are not any symptoms of infection. Are you one of the millions infected with a parasite chances are you are or know someone who is. Although we love our pets they can pose an ifection to use. Common examples are; Cat litter boxes may pose a threat of toxoplasmosis; the Toxoplasma gondii parasite is found in cat feces. Dogs carry Echinococcus, an intestinal tapeworm the eggs of which spread over a dog’s fur via its anus. Unhealthy human contact with infected dogs, such as kissing, transports the eggs into the human intestine from where they can make their way to a host’s brain and liver.
