Nutmeg comes from a large evergreen that was native to the Moluccas and was known hundreds of years ago as a valuable quantity in the early spice trade. Even then, it was praised for its effects when used in moderation but noted as dangerous if used to excess. The essential oil is steam distilled from the seeds of the fruit crushed to a butter while its sister oil, mace, is made from the dried pulp.

Nutmeg has long been used as a culinary spice and during the eighteenth century, freshly grated nutmeg was used to make a nightcap. It has an uplifting fragrance which can aid in reducing nervous tension, help with insomnia, and lift feelings of tension and anxiety. Nutmeg is also considered to promote feelings of euphoria and can be used as a personal perfume or for creating a pleasant atmosphere.

PROPERTIES: Uplifting, aphrodisiac, euphoric, soothing.

BLENDS WELL WITH: Clary Sage, Cinnamon, Geranium, Orange, Rosemary, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine.

PRECAUTIONS: Use in moderation. Must be well diluted for application to the skin. Avoid use during pregnancy.

For a sensual perfume combine one drop Nutmeg, fifteen drops Jasmine and one tablespoon Almond oil for a sensuous personal perfume with euphoric properties.

For an uplifting fragrance: Place three drops Nutmeg on a tissue and inhale throughout the day to dispel feelings of anxiety and depression.

For an intimate atmosphere: When used in the diffuser, the essence of three drops Nutmeg and three drops Ylang Ylang creates a an evocative room fragrance.

For relieving nervous tension and insomnia: Add one drop Nutmeg on a tissue and place under the pillow to encourage restful slumber.
