Lemongrass
Cymbopogon citratus
Lemongrass is similar to lemon with its refreshing and antiseptic properties but it is more warming. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine and is widely used in both soap and perfume for its fresh scent. The essential oil is steam distilled from chopped lemongrass.
Lemongrass is often used as a cooking spice in Asian cooking spice and is a positive influence on the digestive system. It can stimulate a poor appetite and help with digestion. Its antiseptic and antifungal properties make it an excellent household cleanser and with its deodorizing abilities, it makes a great footbath. When added to a lotion, it is also an effective insect repellant that won’t clog pores or congest the skin.
PROPERTIES: Antifungal, antiseptic, deodorant, digestive, mental stimulant.
BLENDS WELL WITH: Eucalyptus, Lemon, Juniper, Rosemary, Lavender, Peppermint, Spearmint.
PRECAUTIONS: Dilute well using concentrations of no more than 3%. Do not use on irritated or inflamed skin. If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test before using.
For a natural insect repellant: If fleas, flies and mosquitoes won’t bug off, try a lemongrass repellant. Dilute twelve drops lemongrass in one oz. carrier oil or unscented lotion.
For a stimulating atmosphere: Boost mental focus and clarity by vaporizing six drops lemongrass in the diffuser.
For a deodorizing foot soak: Soak feet in a warm bowl of water containing two drops of lemongrass and one drop Spearmint to eliminate bacterial and keep the feet smelling fresh.
For household cleansing: Eliminate bacteria and freshen the atmosphere by adding three drops lemongrass to a large bowl of soapy, warm water for use as an all purpose cleanser.
