Ayurvedic BP Formula

Arjuna or Terminalia arjuna is found in the lower Himalayas, Bihar, Bengal Southern India and Ceylon. It is a unique herb that helps maintain a healthy heart and reduces the effects of stress and nervousness. Arjuna promotes effective cardiac functioning and regulates blood pressure. Arjuna has been the herb of choice in Ayurveda for cardiovascular health. Arjuna's ability to suppress the blood's absorption of lipids indicates that it has cholesterol-regulating properties. Its principle constituents are L-sitosterol, ellagic acid and arjunic acid.

The bark of Arjuna is useful as an anti-ischemic and cardioprotective agent in hypertension and in ischemic heart disease, especially in disturbed cardiac rhythm, angina or myocardial infarction. The bark powder possesses diuretic and a general tonic effect in cases of cirrhosis of the liver, in addition to prostaglandin enhancing and coronary risk factor modulating properties. It induces a drug-dependent decrease in blood pressure and heart rate.

Rauwolfia is a climbing shrub that is found in the tropical Himalayas as well as other tropical locales. Its alkaloids belong to the general class of medicines called anti-hypertensives. They are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).Rauwolfia alkaloids work by controlling nerve impulses along certain nerve pathways. As a result, they act on the heart and blood vessels to lower blood pressure.

Ipomoea root is native to the hotter parts of India. The roots are tonic, mucilaginous and have a bitter taste. It acts as a diuretic and as a mild purgative. In addition to being helpful with blood pressure, it is of value to the liver and spleen. This herb is found in many Ayurvedic formulas.

Tribulus Terrestris is common in sandy soil throughout India and Ceylon. The plant and its fruit are esteemed as diuretic, cooling and tonic. The diuretic properties of the plant, no doubt, are due to the large quantities of the natural nitrates present as well as the essential oil which occurs in the seeds. Its action on the mucous membrane of the urinary tract closely resembles that of Buchu and Uvaursi flowers.

Magnesium is an essential mineral which has been found to be commonly deficient in the average American diet. Furthermore, many forms of supplemental magnesium are not readily absorbed by the gut (they are not bioavailable). Magnesium Aspartate has been found to be the most bioavailable form of magnesium.

Magnesium is a very important essential macromineral, even though there are only several ounces in the body (0.05 percent of body weight). It is involved in several hundred enzymatic reactions, many of which contribute to production of energy and cardiovascular function. Decreases in magnesium intake have been more prevalent in our American diet with additions of supplemental vitamin D and calcium, dietary phosphorus, and refined or processed carbohydrate foods. Drinking soft water decreases magnesium intake, while diuretic drugs cause magnesium loss, as do alcohol, caffeine, and sugar. Decreased blood and tissue levels of magnesium have been shown to be related to high blood pressure, kidney stones, heart disease and, particularly, heart attacks due to coronary artery spasm(magnesium helps relax and dilate coronary arteries).
