Pantothenic Acid
Vitamin B-5
Pantothenic Acid, or Vitamin B-5, is essential for humans and animals for growth, reproduction, and normal physiological functions. B-5 helps energize the adrenal glands; it is essential in producing, transporting, and releasing energy from fats. Synthesis of cholesterol (needed to manufacture Vitamin D and steroid hormones) depends on Pantothenic Acid.
Found in all living things, scientists derived the name "Pantothenic Acid" from the Greek root "Panthos," which means everywhere. Although it is in many of the foods we eat, (i.e., organ meats, lobster, poultry, soybeans, lentils, split peas, yogurt, eggnog, avocados, mushrooms, and sweet potatoes), Pantothenic Acid loss during processing is significant, as it is stable in neutral solution but is readily destroyed by heat in either alkali or acid. Little Pantothenic Acid is absorbed from these foods, especially if there is a deficiency.
Symptoms of Pantothenic Acid deficiency, which has occurred under conditions of severe malnutrition, include numbness in the toes and painful burning in the feet (melalgia). Experimentally-induced Pantothenic Acid deficiency in humans, produced headache, fatigue, insomnia, intestinal disturbances, and impaired antibody production. Most of these symptoms and signs resolved with administration of Pantothenic Acid.
Any single B-Vitamin, including Pantothenic Acid should be taken with B-Complex. When essential B-Vitamins are not present, the activities of the other B-Vitamins are weakened. B-Vitamins compete with each other for absorption in the intestines; if one is missing, an imbalance can occur, thus the importance of including B-Complex with any B-Vitamin.
