M.S.M. is an odorless, essentially tasteless, water-soluble white crystalline substance that serves as an important, bio-available source of dietary Sulphur. Sulphur plays an indispensable role in human nutrition that is unfortunately often overlooked. It is an essential dietary component responsible for maintaining the bonds between certain amino acids. It has a critical role in maintaining the integrity of connective tissue. Thiol (i.e. Sulfhydryl) groups are vital for the catalytic function of many of the body's enzymes. To perform properly, our bodies need a constant intake of easily available sulphur.
The subject of extensive research since 1979, M.S.M. is of exceedingly low toxicity to all forms of plant and animal life. Acute, intermediate and long term studies indicate that M.S.M. exhibits very low toxicity by any route of administration. Purified M.S.M. can be applied topically in a gel or administered orally as the crystalline material. When incorporated into a gel and applied to the skin, purified M.S.M. helps soften, soothe, smooth and make older skin more pliable. The results have been quite remarkable. Except for its beneficial, inhibitory effect on cross-linking of collagen and proteins, whereby it reduces hardening of skin and connective tissue, M.S.M. appears to be inert in tissues and body fluids. Because of its inertness, M.S.M. is non-allergenic and non-pyretic and has no interfering or undesirable pharmacological effects.
Individuals who manifest an allergic response to drugs, non-steroidal anti-arthritic agents and oral antibiotics, as well as those who are mildly to severely allergic to various foods (e.g.: cereals, seafood, milk, etc.), report either a lessened intolerance or a complete tolerance to these substances. M.S.M. is effective in ameliorating gastrointestinal upset, such as that produced by parasitic infection or the ingestion of certain pharmaceuticals. Individuals with gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea, chronic constipation, nausea, hyper-acidity and inflammation of mucous membranes have also experienced dramatic relief. In vitro and in vivo tests suggest that M.S.M. has activity against a variety of medically important parasitic problems of the intestinal and urogenital tracts. For example, M.S.M. is active against Giardia Lamblia ("Traveler’s Diarrhea"), trichomonads and round worms. It may affect such infections by competing for binding sites at the mucous membrane surface, presenting a blocking interface between the host and the parasite.
