A pplications and Ways to use Essential Oils:

  • English- Diluting small amounts of essential oils in vegetable oil and massaging into the body to relax and relieve stress.
  • French- Ingesting* and applying topically ndiluted.     *Some oilsC AN NOT  be Ingested
  • German- Inhalation

Essential Oils methods:

Inhalation:
Y
ou can inhale the oils by applying it to your palm and putting it close to your face and take some gentle breaths. This is a preferred method to inhale essential oils rather than putting the oil on your pillow case or a tissue. By putting it in your palm you’re also applying it topically so none of the oil is wasted on a tissue or absorbed in a pillow.

Another great way to inhale the oils is by diffusing them. If you choose this method it is best to use a diffuser that does not use heat in the process of diffusing.  Heat can change the chemical make up of the oil which will change the action of the oil. Since the molecules of Essential Oils are very small, just by inhaling them the chemical molecules travel up the nose where they are trapped by olfactory membranes. The olfactory system then sends electrical impulses to the limbic system. The Limbic system is in the center of the brain and is the processing center of reason, emotion and smell. Because the limbic system is also directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, simply inhaling essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects. Documented research from Berlin and Austria in 1994, showed brain scans done before and after the inhalation of frankincense and sandalwood. The scans showed increased oxygen around the pineal and pituitary glands and increased secretions of antibodies, endorphins and neurotransmitters. It’s also been shown that inhalation has a direct effect on the immune system. So even just sniffing the oil out of the bottle is going to effect your health dramatically.

Massaging:
N
ew Suns almond oil is perfect for diluting the oils. The purpose of diluting the Essential Oils is to avoid irritating the skin. There are some oils that should be diluted when applied to the skin. These include cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, oregano, peppermint, and rosemary.  There are several others where dilution is recommended. The best way to know, is to do a skin test on yourself. Just apply one drop of oil on the underside of your forearm. If your skin feels hot or turns red just apply the almond oil to the area. Then the next time you use that particular oil be sure to dilute it first!
Because the molecules of Essential Oils are so small, when an oil is applied topically it can travel through out the entire body in a matter of minutes. There are certain areas of the body where our skin is more permeable: The scalp, soles of feet and the palms of the hands. Two other areas that are great to apply them are the ears and the spine.  Every time I use an essential oil, unless I’m spot treating an area, I put a drop or two on the sole of each foot and rub it in, then I put a couple of drops in my hand!
Ingesting:
M
ost of the single oils are safe to take internally, but I wouldn’t take the blends that way. The single oils that should not be taken internally are cypress, eucalyptus, jasmine and tea tree. To take the oils internally it is best to put one or two drops in rice milk, honey, on bread or in a small amount of veg. oil. You can also buy empty capsules and put a few drops in a capsule and swallow it.  Many people rarely take Essential Oils internally just because simple inhalation and topical application work great, but just know that your oils are pure and safe if you feel ingesting a particular oil is right for you or one of your clients!

Safey Guidelines to Follow:

  1. Always keep a bottle of pure vegetable oil handy when using essential oils.  You can use the vegetable oil to dilute the essential oil before applying to your skin, or if you apply the essential oil neat and then experience a burning sensation apply the vegetable oil for relief.

  2. Keep bottles closed tightly and in a cool location. If properly stored essential oils will maintain their potency for many years.

  3. Keep out of reach of children.

  4. Essential oils rich in menthol, such as peppermint, should not be used on the throat or neck area of children under 30 months of age.

  5. Grapefruit, lemon, orange and other citrus oils should not be applied to areas that will be exposed to direct sunlight in the next 3-4 days following application.

  6. Keep essential oils away form eye area and never put directly into the ears.  Do not handle contacts or rub your eyes with essential oils on your fingers.

  7. Pregnant women should always consult a healthcare professional when starting any type of health program.  Do not use wild tansy, clary sage, sage, fennel, wintergreen, or hyssop during pregnancy.

  8. Epileptics and hypertensive patients should consult their healthcare professional. Hypertensive patients should avoid sage and rosemary.

  9. Keep essential oils away from open flames, sparks or electricity. Some essential oils, including orange, fir, pine, and peppermint are potentially flammable.

  10. Always skin test an essential oil before using it topically.

  11. Avoid applying essential oils on areas where you have cosmetics, personal care products, or cleansers with synthetic ingredients. The oils can carry these into the tissues and bloodstream.

  12. When adding essential oils to a bath mix them with Epsom salts. Other wise the oil will just float on top of the water.
